Interview technique
Prior to the interview
- Do your research. You should be able to comfortably outline what the company does and ideally what they are trying to achieve in the short term.
- Know your CV. So that when asked you have actual examples to highlight your relevance to the position.
- Familiarise yourself with the position description. Ensuring that you do indeed have the relevant technical experience.
- Think about your long term goals and how this company and position can help you achieve them.Dress sharply.
During the interview
- Be confident, and if you are nervous remember that this is natural and can be easily managed.
- Answer the questions succinctly, try and control the desire most people have to reinforce the same point twice.
- Ensure that you clarify what you are being asked if it’s not clear to you the first time round.
- Round off your answers; if your explanation requires detail ensure that you conclude by summarising the relevance of your example to the question that was asked.
- Discuss your career goals and how this position can help.
- Be enthusiastic and show your character.
- If there is more than one interviewer ensure you address both/them evenly when answering.
- Ask relevant questions about the role and the company. Remembering that the interview is also an opportunity for you to identify if the position is exactly what you want.
- Take your time, this will ensure you are relaxed.
